SAXO?INSTITUTTET KØBENHAVNS UNIVERSITET FRW104?HUM.KU.DK ABSTRACT (UK) Ulrik Langen: “The crow knows which sow to ride”: Fruentimmer-Tidenden and the irst debate of the freedom of the press in the early 1770s Unlimited freedom of the press was of?icially declared in the kingdom of Denmark-Norway on September 14, 1770. But how was this sudden and unexpected new freedom initiated and implemented in practice, and how can this transition from a general public under censorship to a public opinion bene?itting from unlimited freedom of the press be observed? The transformation can be studied in Fruentimmer-Tidenden, a periodical which appeared in the years before the freedom of the press was declared and continued to be published in the ?irst period of the new uncensored Öffentlichkeit. In this article, I explore an up until now neglected debate starting in Fruentimmer-Tidenden which is particularly illustrative of the transfer to the new condition of press freedom. The debate was characterized by incipient experimentations with freedom of the press and created conceptions of female readerships – and was generated by two male authors using ?ictitious female pseudonyms. This initiating debate was performed as a discussion on gender and morality, as well as fundamentally dealing with the actual purpose of the freedom of the press.
